Continuation and closure of the IJ saga

Sunday Times retracts comments on IJ girls

The Sunday Times has apologised for the distress caused by an article it published that sparked off angry reactions from local convent schools, their students and parents.

On page two yesterday, the newspaper noted that in its Sept 17 article, "Singapore A-Z … once more, with feeling", that it had "made disparaging remarks" about girls from the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus schools.

"We retract those remarks. No malice or disrespect was intended. We are sorry for the distress caused," said the newspaper.

The eleven convent schools had threatened legal action for the allegedly defamatory remarks which described convent girls as being "easy" with members of the opposite sex.

This paper reported last Wednesday that a lawyer's letter was sent to Singapore Press Holdings demanding an apology and costs and damages.

But Today learnt yesterday that the case has been settled "amicably", and that the Infant Jesus Board of Management — which manages the 11 schools — has accepted the newpaper's apology and retraction.

IJ girls

Recently, there is this hoo-ha about an article published in the Sunday Times about CHIJ girls.

The article lists the A-Z of Singapore-a tongue in cheek look at our icons and subjects.

At the alphabet I-it is stated as I-IJ girls, terms for girls who studied at (CHIJ) Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus. It is a generalisation for girls who studied at CHIJ schools and who like to hem their school unifrom real short, wear their belts real low on their hips and are allegedly easy when it comes to the opposite sex.

This description has prompted the 11 IJ Schools to threaten legal action against SPH.

When I read that article, I though it was just a typical stereotype of the IJ girls and just brush it aside, never to know it has sparked off so much disapproval in the community.

Being an IJ girl myself, having spent 10 years in the convent, I must admit IJ girls more often than not fall into the typical stereotype. My closest friends are all from IJ and none of us are what was described in the paper. Among us though, I do see a similar trait among ourselves-some of which: we are vocal to the extent of being loud sometimes, very critical also. :P

These, however, does not distinguish us from other people nor make us different in any way.

I am proud to say I was from IJ :)

Hmm..in response to all the letters in the forum, I wonder if SPH will offer an apology..I doubt it.

No Sandy for me

Rem I said I am going to Sandy's concert in Dec with Sam,well, I totally forgot it was XM's wedding on the same day.Until my another friend,so qiao, her name is Sandy also hehe, called to tell me her wedding is on Dec 10, then I remembered Xm's is on the 9th.

It was a frantic rush to inform Sam and trying to get people to go on my behalf.Thank God,Mer is ok, after I told her I will sell the tic to her at 50% discount,haizs...no choice. So she and Sam can go and see Sandy's concert together. What a pity, was kinda looking forward to it but XM's wedding is more important-once in a lifetime, can't miss it for anything in the world. Else, not only XM will kill me, ZY also.^__^

Wedding fever is on again. I have 1 wedding lunch on Oct 8th-Lyn's big day!!

In Dec, I have at least 4 to attend...............

Finally, I have done my fair share of exploring the SE hp and has taken some pics. Gosh, I love the camera!!!!! I think its even better than my digicam :P

We were supposed to go JB yesterday but postphone it to prob next week as Kiat has some work to settle. In the end, we went swimming and I watched dvd while he was hard at work

We went to Jack Place's for dinner at PP. It has been ages since we went to Jack Place. The business is so good, while waiting for a table, Kiat even had time to go for a haircut...

Suntec and the IMF

Was at Suntec on Friday for lunch. The roads surrounding Suntec are sealed and we had to detour to get there.

There were so many police-as if we are preparing for war :P

Suntec was very quiet,we went to Kuishin Bo and it was pretty empty too.

Thanks YT for the treat!

After lunch, it was off to town to meet Mar to get my hp! Yay, I am now an official SE user :)

After some shopping, we split up and I went to Holland to meet XM, ZY and Esther for dinner at Holland before going to Little Bali for drinks. XM is thinking of having her photo shoot there so we dropped by for drinks as well as let her recki the place :) As for ZY,he is embarking on a new career soon and should be posted out of SIN soon,so we will meet up again very soon before he ciao.

A tale of 2 handphones

I was supposed to get the N6280 on Sat. I have been wanting to get a new hp for quite a while as I need to use off my company entitlement, otherwise very 'lugi'. But I am very comfortable with my current set-the Nokia 6020. The phone has all the basic features which I need-calls,sms,infrared, camera function but most importantly,it was given to me by my bf who bought in from HKG. As such, this phone has a sentimental feeling to me and for people who know me, I don't change hp very often also :P

My current N6020:

My colleague has the N6280 and I quite like the hp due to its big screen. Frankly speaking, I am pretty out of touch with hp now and have no idea which are the latest models as there are just so many out there. So I pretty much set my mind on the N6280.

My bf and I were at the M1 Shop on Sat and while queuing, he asked me why I did not consider the SE K800i. I have been a Nokia user eversince I had my first hp and is very much atuned to Nokia user friendly features, hence it did not cross my mind to consider other brands.

I have heard rave reviews regarding this phone and we asked the salesguy for his opinion and he immediately say no need to think, choose the SE over the Nokia model. Wow, ok. I was quite tempted as I like the camera function of the phone-a whopping 3.2 megapixels! My bf strongly recommed as I use my hp quite often to take pic so that I can post them on blogger :). The price is almost twice that of the Nokia, luckily I managed to get a hp voucher to top it off from my company's entitlement.

Set. I will be getting the SEK800i next Friday then. I took leave on Fri!!!!!! Yipee...long weekend for me!

Do you want to be a star??

Project superstar season 2 is here and the registration and audition is held at HDB hub.

As such, I was able to see the happenings.

On Mon and Tue, it was for audition for the guys contestant.

Quite a crowd, then realised that it was the Sep 1 week holiday,no wonder.

The contestant need to go up on stage to sing. I took that pic on Tue during my lunch break. Some kinda lunch time entertainment for us hehe. It was always the 'sing off key','cmi' contestants who got the most applause from the crowd. I think they are very courageous, like that also dare to participate.

Everyone also want a shot at fame.(even if it is only a few minutes) Well, they got it, I guess :P

Wiener Kaffeehaus

We went to Wiener Kaffeehaus on Friday after dinner. This is an Austrian coffee place just 3 mins walk away from my place, situated at Neil Road.

It is at the corner of the above row of shophouse.

The place is nicely decorated, owned by an ang moh and his Singaporean wife.

We had the almdudler-an austrian soft drink;taste like ginger ale to me. We also ordered the choc cake and strawberry crepe. Sad to say, the crepe sucks and the cake is so-so only. I guess their speciality lies in the austrian coffee, but my bf and I are not coffee drinkers hence we skipped that. Wonder how long WK will be here before they 'say bye' as this location is really quite 'ulu'.I wonder if they do make profit??

Weekend updates:

As mentioned earlier, we went to watch a movie yesterday at Cathay,Dhoby Gaut.My first time there since it was restored. The show was nice, now waiting to read the novel.

We had dinner at Swenson,HSBC cardholders get a sundae free for every main course.Good deal :)

Ohhh,I was also saying that I wanted to catch the film version of the Ya-ya sisterhood..Ch 5 was showing it yesterday night!.I managed to catch 3/4 of the movie. There were many differences between the movie and the novel itself. I prefer the novel anytime over the film and Sandra Bullock was not very convincing as the lead character.

Was at Comex this afternoon with my bf. Loads of people.

Sat updates:

Am at work now-Sat duty..no calls so far..sians...so am taking the opportunity to update my blog :)

Can't wait for the day to end!! Then I will be off to meet Kiat and Mar for movie-THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Hope pz can join us for dinner later.

Quite a highly anticipated film following the huge success of the novel. Been wanting to get the book from pz first before hitting the movie but no chance, So it's movie first then the book.

Talking about books, we went to the library some weeks ago and borrowed a couple of books to read. I managed to finish the only 2 novels which I borrowed.

Perfect Alibis by Jane Wenham Jones.

Randomly picked this book to read. Sha, I think you have read this too right? The cover looks very familiar to me. This book was so-so,easy to read, casual.

I just managed to finish this one yesterday. (We have to return all the books tomorrow) Saw the trailer for this book a few years back but did not manage to catch the movie.

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood-Rebecca Wells

The book is all about friendship and love. Very touching! The story is set in the town of Louisiana, tracing the lives stories of 4 friends and their family back in the 1930s to the present. I find the style of writing very unique. A lot of phrases is written in very 'native southern american slang'.

Anyone has the DVD of this novel?? Thinking of watching the film version.

From books to music now. I will be going to Sandy Lam's concert on 9th Dec 06 with Sam! Sam is a huge fan and jioed me to go again. The 1st time I went to a concert was also with him to Sandy's 4 years ago. Very deja-vu :P

6 more hours to go....

Happy Birthday Sha!

Happy Birthday Sha! lalalala

Hope you have loads of fun at Yellowstone Park. Pics please...:P
